Reston, Virginia – The Academy of Christian Education (ACE) announces another step in creating a 21st century educational facility. The Academy already has an impressive arsenal of technology-based teaching tools – a state-of-the art dual platform computer lab; interactive white boards and projectors in every classroom; a cutting-edge student response system; and a student, self-checking electronic attendance system. In addition, ACE is equally committed to training both its teachers and students on how to incorporate all this technology into a successful learning environment.
ACE teachers are spending the summer learning and using these technology tools themselves. “All our teachers spend hours in technology workshops and other staff development seminars throughout the summer. Plus, they are working on their lesson plans for next year and each classroom’s SMART Board is an invaluable tool,” explained Mrs. Eva Russell, Resource and Technology Director. “Every teacher here can create and deliver a virtual learning experience using a variety of media, such as video, audio, and the Internet through the SMART Board. These electronic whiteboards allow a lesson to come to life, and greatly increase student participation and collaboration.”
In addition, each teacher is responsible for creating and maintaining his/her own class’ Web site. “No longer is it enough for parents to receive a monthly newsletter,” notes Mrs. Russell. They want to be actively involved in their child’s education. We are moving towards each class’ website having samples of student work, class photos, current information on class room activities, assignments, and even a teacher’s blog.
ACE students embrace technology at an early age. Four-year-olds learn how to create slideshows and programming so they can help “Roamer the Turtle”, a miniature robot, move to specific destinations. Older students create Lego alligators that can open and close their mouths, thanks to pulleys and sensors.
Meanwhile, fifth and sixth graders apply critical thinking, logic, math, and sequencing to advance robotic training. From virtually dissecting a frog, on an interactive white board, to conducting field experiments on the school’s grounds with wireless, hand-held microscopes and probes, the opportunities to integrate technology and education to create a first-class learning experience are endless. Plus, it’s fun!
As evidence of the value technology adds to the learning experience:
